STORY: Hundreds of Lebanese and Syrian nationals living in Lebanon took part on Monday (August 8) in a demonstration denouncing the Syrian regimes crackdown on its own protesters in which 2,000 people have been killed since March, according to Syrian activists.
The protest in Beirut included Lebanese intellectuals, writers, journalists and artists as well as activists from Lebanese parties and Syrians studying in Lebanon.
The protest was held in the symbolic Martyrs Square in central Beirut where in March 2005 hundreds of thousands of Lebanese demonstrated to call for the withdrawal of Syrian forces following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri in February of that year.
This is a first time a demonstration like this has been held in Beirut where the official response to the violence in neighboring Syria has been mute. Demonstrations against the Syrian regime have been taking place regularly in Tripoli in northern Lebanon but not in Beirut until this protest.
''No to silence,'' read of the banners held as many protesters chanting anti-Assad rhetoric. One man cried: ''We swear by our creator that we will put you Bashar on trial , you and your regime.''
One protester said President Bashar al-Assad was using excessive force against protesters.
''This is a stand of solidarity with the right of the Syrian people to freely demand their basic rights and dignity and pride and their right not to be killed because of this demand and of course the brutal oppression that is taking place even the Israelis haven't used this against the Palestinians in a long time. It is not acceptable for any Arab government to kill its people in this way,'' said Antoine Haddad, a university professor.
Another said this protest was the least that could be done to show support to the Syrians.
''This is the least we can do, we should have done more, the entire country should be participating in this demonstration. In the end, Syrians are not just our brothers, we are the same race,'' said Firas Ghaleb.
The focus of the Syrian regime's crackdown is on the city of Hama and the eastern city of Deir al-Zour where hundreds of people have been killed as a result, according to activists.
